Thanks to the Dictionary.com app on my phone, and it's word-of-the-day feature, I learned that "bird-dog" is a verb. In fact, "bird dog" is a noun, and a type of dog, but to bird-dog is to follow, watch carefully, or investigate. I'm assuming this is derived from qualities of the dog itself.
