A Polarizing Week

It was quite the week in news. If you don't know this, you've been living under a rock. News of more problems in Libya, including attacks on embassies and the UN headquarters; the most interesting Canadian election in my life time (or at least since I was eligible to vote); and the death of one of the U.S.'s declared enemies; among, I'm sure, many other life-changing events that got drowned out by these headlines (I'm probably missing some NHL play-off upsets that rocked someone's world).

It was the kind of week that gives you a glimpse into people's ideologies, whether you want a glimpse or not. From Facebook status updates to snide remarks in the hallway at work, it was hard to remind myself this week that there are more than just two camps of people. At least two camps per issue. Here's a rough sketch:

A. You think we should all get out of Libya and leave them to their own devices OR we (read: the US) should get in there and do everything we can to depose Gadhafi and support the rebels.

B. You applaud the Conservative majority win OR you think Canada is officially going to hell in a hand basket over the next 4 years.

C. You are thrilled that the U.S.'s decade-long search for bin Laden is over and are celebrating the justice of it all OR you are aghast at the celebrations over death and wondering why it's okay to fight evil with evil.

Thankfully, I'm smart enough to know (most days) that opinions are never this neat and simple. People fall into a very large, nuanced spectrum between these thoughts, and maybe even a 3D spectrum that has any number of thought-patterns shooting off in every which direction. And although the spectrum seemed quite simple this past week, one thing I did learn for sure, is that everyone has an opinion, especially when it comes to events that tug at our ideological heart strings.

It has been quite the week to do some soul-searching for sure.
